SEO won you a rank in a list. GEO wins you a sentence inside the answer. The target moved — and so did the signals that get you there.
Generative engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini — don't hand back ten blue links. They synthesize one answer and, sometimes, attribute their sources. Getting cited is the new getting ranked.
Traditional SEO optimizes a position in a list. GEO optimizes citation share — the percentage of AI answers that select and quote your content. The currencies don't carry over cleanly.

The biggest surprise for SEO veterans: backlinks are a weak predictor of AI citation. What predicts it is off-site presence — brand mentions in forums, reviews, and press that teach a model what your brand stands for, independent of the link graph.
A Semrush analysis of 150,000 AI citations found Reddit at 40.1% of LLM references, Wikipedia 26.3%, and YouTube 23.5%. Owned content supplements the answer; third-party platforms dominate it.
So "deprioritise backlinks" means reallocate, not abandon — link authority still carries a positive, secondary signal. The reallocation is toward brand-mention building and content structured for extraction.
SEO rank is stable: query twice, get the same position. GEO is sampled. Run the same prompt five times and your brand may appear in two of them. Two facts set the terrain:
